Saintorum, Saintorum we never knew you

and I'm not so sure we want to but be that as it may I believe it's always good to get to know who is trying to acquire the highest office in the land so I thought I'd take a closer look at Saintorum.

Things he's said on the campaign trail.

1) Saintorum believes gay marriages should be annulled. He feels religious people have a Constitutional right to discriminate against gay people claiming, “We have a right the Constitution of religious liberty but now the courts have created a super-right that’s above a right that’s actually in the Constitution, and that’s of sexual liberty. And I think that’s a wrong, that’s a destructive element.” Oops there goes the gay vote.

2) ‘I’M FOR INCOME INEQUALITY’: “They talk about income inequality. I’m for income inequality,” Saintorum said during an event in Pella, Iowa in December. “I think some people should make more than other people, because some people work harder and have better ideas and take more risk, and they should be rewarded for it. I have no problem with income inequality.” Huh? There goes the vote of the 99%.

3) Saintorum has pledged to repeal all federal funding for contraception and allow the states to outlaw birth control, insisting that “it’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.” Uh oh, there goes all the people who want to fool around...gonna be a no on votes I'm sure Saintorum never fooled around, whatta ya think?

4) During an appearance on Fox News Sunday in October, Saintorum defended his support for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell by arguing that gay soldiers would disrupt the military because “they’re in close quarters, they live with people, they obviously shower with people.” He also suggested that “there are people who were gay and lived the gay lifestyle and aren’t anymore.” Saintorum doesn't like gays in the military because they're in close quarters and take showers and stuff. Bye bye gay vote...again!

5) Are you ready for this? During an appearance on Christian television in January, Saintorum said he was surprised that President Obama didn’t know when life began — given his skin color. “I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people,” he explained.
Nope, not gonna say it, wouldn't be prudent. There goes the bl*ck vote.

6) Speaking in Le Mars, Iowa in December, Saintorum promised to significantly reduce federal funding for food stamps, arguing that the nation’s increasing obesity rates render the program unnecessary. Tsk tsk, now he's offended all those obese people on food stamps...there goes the obese vote.

7) While discussing his track record as a champion of the partial birth abortion ban in June, Saintorum dismissed exceptions other senators wanted to carve out to protect the life and health of mothers, calling such exceptions “phony.” “They wanted a health exception, which of course is a phony exception which would make the ban ineffective,” he said. Well, we all know those health exceptions are just phony and made up exceptions so those abortion loving Liberals can get their abortions. He's now lost the abortion lover's vote but who cares, I mean, it's just their lives at stake.

8) Saintorum, who claims that Obamacare motivated him to run for president, told reporters in April that his daughter Bella — who was born with a genetic abnormality — wouldn’t survive in a country with “socialized medicine.” “Children like Bella are not given the treatment that other children are given.” Well, that makes sense [cough].

9) Answering a question about the uninsured, Saintorum explained that health care, like a car, is a luxury resource that is rationed by society and recalled the story of a woman who said she was spending $200 a month on life-saving prescriptions. Saintorum told her to stop complaining and instead lower her cable and cell phone bills. Hum, wonder if she even had a cell phone and cable? I can see now he's going to lose all those slackers who are spending $200 a month on life saving meds.

10) The former Pennsylvania senator not only defended insurers for denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, he also argued that individuals who are sick should pay higher premiums because they cost more money to insure. And just this morning, he mocked President Obama for extending health care to “everyone.” Aren't you just loving this guy...well, except those who have pre-existing conditions and have the gall to want insurance. More lost votes...tsk!

11) During the CNN national security debate in November, Saintorum endorsed the idea of profiling Muslims to increase airport security. “Obviously, Muslims would be someone you’d look at,” he told the debate’s moderator Wolf Blitzer. But his proposed profiling for the sake of national security follows a pattern of his holding anti-Muslim beliefs. No doubt Muslims will not be voting for Saintorum...really.

Let's see, who has he not offended? I'm sure there are some he hasn't but there's still plenty of time left.

Well, now I have a better idea of who Saintorum is and I can honestly say you could not pay me to vote for him...unless of course, it's in the open primary here in Texas. :)

About a year ago, I liberal friend from another board was making the case that the "religious right" was all about stuffing women into the kitchen, taking away our rights, etc....
She posted an article with quotes by Santorum. The quotes included some from his book where, most definitely the things he said definitely supported the focus of the article....that he was indeed all about promoting housewifedom and diminishing women's choices to work outside the home and not have children. After reading what he was purported to have said, I wanted to slap him with his own book.

Then a conservative friend on that board did a bit of a factcheck. She found the actual quotes by Santorum, from both his book and his speeches and interviews. As it turned out, the original source offered had taken it upon themselves to leave out giant chunks of what he said, thereby changing his meaning and misrepresenting his positions entirely on some issues.
The source that did that.....ThinkProgress.

So, I think I'll reserve judgement until I have the patience and time to go seek out these quotes and positions from the horse's mouth. Right now, he's not Barack Obama, and I think that's going to be one of his saving graces if he gets the GOP nod.

Yeah if he was Obama he would have to be Black and that wouldn't sit real well with him. Come on now, hes a flash in the pan, 30 days from now he will be gone.

hopefully. I'm not obese and neither is my family, so we don't need to starve to death... but I doubt if he plans to measure our waists before he cuts our food stamps.

Yes, ThinkProgress has burned me before so it's always good to double check. The fact the Christian Right is behind him is pretty telling because they hold many of the views he espouses. For the GOP anyone who is not President Obama is a saving grace. Clearly there is no one in the GOP field who can hold a candle to the President but that is strictly my opinion. :)

Whether he measures your waist or not I'd hate for him to cut food stamps. There's a lot of folks who depend on those.

we only need the food stamps if we want to eat. We only need to eat if we want to live. It's nice of Rick to offer us options; otherwise, I would have just assumed survival was necessary.

Yes, Days, get rid of that cell phone and cable and stop complaining. The GOPigs have no intention of helping you survive...you're on your own.

Santorum is being USED as Mitt Romney's stalking horse (same as all the previous "Flavors of the Month"...Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Gingrich).

His "job" is to keep the Hard Right and Religious Right divided, between himself, Newt, and Perry.....and allow Romney to win on "plurality".

Then, after Florida...definitely after Super Tuesday....it becomes too late for those groups to rally behind ONE "anti-Mitt, real deal conservative".

Santorum wants America to be a theocracy......for the govt to follow the Bible first and the Constitution second. many repubs want that, too.

e.g. their policy on Israel is Bible-based and not reality based.

I agree. I cannot imagine anyone voting for any of them to be perfectly honest. Contrary to what Con's believe in they have no viable candidate to take the hated Obama's place. Unless they can prevent a majority of voters from voting Obama wins hands down.

Since any GOP running for President will have to draw the Christian right as a means of support they are all going to espouse America as a theocracy. The Christian right allowed bush to get into the position of destroying America.

Won't go that far...Romney CAN win. But he won't do it on the popularity of "conservatism". He'd do it on Obama Derangement Syndrome and eschewing Tea Party'ism to win the Middle.

His Base will vote for him because they hate Obama....to win the Election though, he'll have to sell them out and win Independents and Moderates.

Huskey lives in Santorum's home state, perhaps he can share some more info on his thoughts about how he is as a leader etc over there? Anyone else live in Pennsylvania?

I'd love to hear what Huskey has to say about him. It's just like me knowing about what type of politician Rick Perry really is. Commenters on news forums are always bragging about Perry's job growth record here in Texas so I tell them they can say that because they do not live here. :)
