The man lived 63 years, but is only largely remembered for about a four-year period in the last decade of his life.

The twists of fate.....

That is largely true. Lee County, Texas, just south of Austin,is named after him. He was posted in Texas for a few years early in his career in the US Army. The county seat is Giddings. There is a monument to Gen. Lee on the grounds of the county courthouse.

A hero to many, a villain to some, and likely didn't ask for either......

He was put in quite a predicament; Imagine your home state, the one you grew up and raised your family in, suddenly being at war with your country - And both sides are calling on you to lead the fight. No matter which side he chooses, he's a traitor........There may be other examples in human history where something like this has happened, but there can't be many.

There were many lesser known examples of that in the Civil War. One would be Union Major Gen. George H. Thomas. A native Virginian and 1840 graduate of West Point,he was offered prominent commands in the CSA Army but he did not resign his US Army commission. He served with distinction in the Union Army. He was forever estranged from his family in Virginia and some of his fellow native Virginia,West Pointers.

On this day in 1863 Gen. Lee was appointed Commander of the Army Of Northern Virginia by Pres. Jefferson Davis. It was a fateful day.

Not for long if liberals have their way.

Lee County in Florida is named after him too. County seat is Fort Myers. Visited there in June.
