Looks like we are back up and running (Wednesday, June 19th at 9 AM Eastern)

figure of speech.

the analogy being...if we dont frequent this site. poof. its gone.

so too..if everyone shits it up.
That didn't make sense Phil ---

I don't post as much, at the mo, in here for a couple of reasons, one being personal, as in I am not on line as much as I was for reasons personal and two that when I am on line because of what is going on in British politics now and PJ not being the place for British politics I tend to stick to fb - to see what is being said in each camp and argue or add too the conversation - but I do still pop in here most days --- catch up with friends and occasionally, where it is not a wholly US matter, put in my tuppeny worth.

All of us who have known each other for years might just wish to say 'agree' or 'disagree' - 'smile' at a post 'disapprove' of a post --- where since we might have argued the topic before don't need to say anything else 'cos we know what each other think - sometimes we might have something to add - that an expression alone is denied us it lessens the colour of our exchanges.

somewhere above you commented on the Newbie...vs the loyal resident poster.

All i'm saying is (and not directed at you) if all we loyal resident posters dont visit enough, and discourage newbies....then there will be no site to frequent.

I happen to like...endlessly policing the threads of people i dont know...over and over and over,,

We can. But I, for one, always liked the rating buttons. They're handy and kind of fun. I wish there were more of them.

Your call, of course, but may I offer a couple of suggestions for taking a different approach:

- Make it a policy that whining/reports about ratings will be ignored. Problem solved. Just make the policy known and implement it. With no satisfaction, the reporting will stop. If anyone complains incessantly anyway, do the suspension thing.

And/Or

- Replace the rating buttons -- either all of them or only the ones people complain about -- with more smilies. It takes more effort, since we'd have to quote the post and bring up the smilies box. That should limit abuse without taking anything away. Plus, it could encourage people to comment along with using the smiley, generating more conversation.
The issue is users get notifications when a post gets a response or a rating. And some people here will rate every single post certain users post as negative so that users notifications fill up with ratings and it hurts their user experience.

Its all childish and sad but thats what partisan hacks are, childish and sad.

Newbies have bought us to this loss.

One Newbie in particular swamped some of our alert boxes with dislikes and then complained when anyone disliked their own posts. Why on earth have you taken notice of them?

I just don't want to come here anymore with the goal posts being moved every five mins to accommodate 'posters' who add zilch to the forum.
I have no way or any time to track who uses the ratings. How would I do that exactly? It sounds like you are in agreement the ratings have to go.

posters could simply curb their appetites for ratings.

Could.

I am not in agreement with ratings having to go. Personally, I wish there were more rating choices -

I simply feel that the furniture should not be moved around all of the time --- that ratings should stay, as was, that everything should stay, as was. That if and when there is stability, that everyone knows what is what, life is easier and posters happier --- modding easier --- but that if the admin feels that it must react everytime there is a mini revolt it will just make for more mini revolts because that is the nature of man.

The words to focus on are "That if and when there is stability"

He pays the bills!

And if they don't -- so what? There was once a war between Reptilicus ( Geko) and Barbella as to who could win the most rating's - posters where spending hrs and hrs rating 'cos at that time one could not rate the same poster more than so many goes in a row - it was a soppy game but good clean fun - no harm done and in good humour - but now there is no good humour about it and never can be if admin keeps taking notice of complaints about negative ratings --- it is so bloody PC = Orwellian.

I dont think the admins would care a whit if folks wouldnt take to incessant complaining

Instead, the incessant complaining leads to incessant reporting...leads to incessant need to clean up the reporting.

the admins react to the reporting.

now the ratings are modified, not due to a problem with the ratings, but the abusive reporting.

ps. gecko hasnt been here in years.

What are you a sycophant or SW's personal translator?

SW is perfectly capable of speaking for himself as he is capable of having a reasonable discussion --- unlike you BearClaw.

I know he hasn't. I was making a comparison.

So because the few incessantly complain the many suffer? Why doesn't admin refuse to deal with such reports? For surely if admin reacts to a slew of one sort of silly reporting then they will always feel the need to react to every slew of daft reports --- where as if admin ignores the silly slew of reports this time then people will give up with silly slews of reporting? I just think you are making more work for yourselves and irritation for us - 'reasonable' poster.

we're not who is creating the work.

it's others reactions that need to be curbed

I don't get alerts when someone rates my post.
I simply turned off the alerts for that.
One would think that instead of causing them to be censored for all, one would just turn off its own alerts.

It seems like a lot of the reports every day are about peoples alerts being filled up with dislikes from the same adversaries and we have no time to deal with these extra reports or have any way of tracking ratings.
