I've been on the internet (or what passed for it) since '86

Rebuild With Biden!
It was in '99 or 2000. I bought a Windows Me 2000... Back then we only had dialup. It's been such a long time ago. I am not even sure that's what it was called. :)

Probably '90

I saw my first animated gif in '90 or so. Jiggly boobies it was and saw real trolls and flame wars. I'm sad for what the internet has become from the hay day of it all. It was a better place with fewer peeps. :0)

It was much harder in those days to use animation -- I was able to do it on a Yahoo account/profile. It was a small bird water fountain with little cardinals drinking from it. I thought it was really grand accomplishment. :)
Since you have been on the internet for such a long time, do you have a favorite firewall/security service?

Open source. To start.
1) 2) https://www.freebsd.org/
3) https://www.pfsense.org/products/

And my expertise can wax and wane on the matter given momentary interest. Now that you ask maybe I should look at the appliance (I put together but you can buy) and make sure it is running smoothly ;0)

If you can sit behind three different types of firewalls you can improve your security. What you need after that is an IDS you can work with.

'93 on the freenet from Carnegie Library. But went to the real deal in '95 with AOL... as real as dial-up on a 14.4 modem could get.

Thanks, RE. I have two running. So far so good. Your links were interesting though.
There's many services available, some come bundled with a new computer.
It's so common to read of hackers/viruses -- so being picky over our choices can be worth it -- even when there's some expense involved.:)

Well, you have the firewall built into your internet providers router. Then you have a firewall appliance (you should build yourself) sitting behind that and then you have the firewall on your workstation (You could even add another one in the middle if you wanted to).

The problem is really intrusion detection. All traffic is now being routed through https and ports aren't really being opened and closed so much. Since the traffic is encrypted it is harder to see if the traffic is kosher or not and that is really the problem.

P.S. I built my own firewall and added the open source version of pfsense to it. Saved 300 and got better hardware capacity out of it.

I actually have my doubts any computer/network is completely safe from intrusions/hackers... no matter how many safety features, or firewalls we use.
After watching this movie... it really made me think how dependent as well as vulnerable we have become using computer technology.

Release Date: June 27, 2007 On the July 4th holiday, an attack on the vulnerable United States infrastructure begins to shut down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the scheme has figured out every modern angle — but he never figured on an old-analog fly, John McClane, in the digital ointment. It's the beginning of the holiday, but New York City detective McClane isn't celebrating. He's had yet another argument with his college-age daughter Lucy, and received a crushingly routine assignment to bring in a young hacker, Matt Farrell, for questioning by the FBI. But for McClane, the ordinary has a habit of exploding into the extraordinary — abruptly hurtling him into the wrong place at the wrong time. With Farrell's help, McClane slowly begins to understand the increasing chaos surrounding him. An attack is underway on the vulnerable United States infrastructure, shutting down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the scheme, Thomas Gabriel, stays several moves ahead of McClane as he implements his incredible plans, known to uber-geeks like Farrell as a "fire sale" (as in, everything must go!).

That movie was good as I remember it.

You're right everyone is going to get hacked. Just a matter of when. That's why intrusion detection is the tool that matters. You could have only one firewall and the best intrusion detection system and you'd be safer in that you'd disconnect the computer early on in intrusion, throw a known safe disk image back on, and reconnect. One of the worst things has been internet service providers no longer giving you dynamic IP's for IPV4.

Another bunch of tools good for surveilling your systems is sysinternals (But more hands on than many want to deal with).

Mid-90s in college. My friend told me something about this computer system where you could go on and talk about TV shows and pop culture stuff. Seemed weird and pointless then...
