Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed funding for the Texas state Legislature after Democrats in the state House blocked the Republican-backed election reform bill.
This follows through with a threat he made at the end of May when Democrats blocked S.B. 7 by walking out of the regular legislative session, meaning the House did not have a quorum and therefore could not pass the bill. Among other changes, the bill would create new rules for mail-in voting and provide more access to poll watchers.
GREG ABBOTT THREATENS TO STRIP PAYCHECKS OF DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS WHO WALKED OUT OF STATE LEGISLATURE
"Texans don’t run from a legislative fight, and they don’t walk away from unfinished business," Abbott said in a statement, according to CBS 11. "Funding should not be provided for those who quit their job early, leaving their state with unfinished business and exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session. I therefore object to and disapprove of these appropriations."
Unless the matter is resolved, Democrat and Republican state legislators and their staff will stop getting paid after Aug. 31. Lawmakers are paid $600 per month and an extra $221 for every day they are in session, according to the Texas Tribune.
"Texas has a governor, not a dictator or emperor," said Chris Turner, chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, in a Friday statement. "The tyrannical veto of the legislative branch is the latest indication that Governor Greg Abbott is simply out of control."

"Abbott’s actions are an inexcusable and dangerous attack on the separation of powers, as his veto consolidates more power in his own office," he added.
Abbot said he would call a special session on the matter, though a date for one has yet to be set.
