Unemployment benefits ended, but hiring did not surge in September

It seemed to me that with all of the job openings being posted that there was no need to be handing out free money to people who refused to work. And that's what we did. We ended the extra pandemic unemployment programs. Logically it made sense that this would encourage people to get a job. This hasn't happened.

Apparently many people have retired early or have decided to live off their savings at least for now. I still suspect that things will change and many people will decide to go back to work. We'll see.

I agreed with the republicans on this issue. So far as is usual for them they've been wrong.

Are we sure the "official" UE rate is reflecting reality?

"The headline unemployment rate measures the proportion of the American civilian labor force anyone over the age of 16 that does not have a job and is still actively looking for work.

"It does not include the large number of people who have given up looking for work, those stuck in low wage, low hour jobs or those stuck in part-time jobs when they want full time ones.

"Economist Dr William Rodgers, vice-president and director of the Institute for Economic Equity at the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis, sees the headline unemployment rate as more of a measure of the fluidity experienced by people trying to get job, rather than a definitive snapshot of who is not working."

You fell for the old Republican line aka brainwashing from 40+ years of AM talk radio baloney....that the average American is just lazy and would rather be on the dole.
Glad that the data shows that is crap.

Well, it's not the 50/60/70's no more TOTO
Fast food and restaurants are failing due to lack of employees that back during those years were the 1st jobs that teens took....today teens drive better automobiles than majority of their parents.........look around you areas you live in.

Back then kids rode school buses to school, today schools need 20 acre's of paved parking for high school kids for parking and school zones are a hell-zone due to parents/grandparents driving little Johnny and Susy to and from school morning and afternoon and meanwhile buses arrive almost empty.......

50/60/70's I'd work any job that I could make a dime, picked blackberries, primed tobacco, picked up hay, mowed neighbors yards with a reel-mower and even Curb-Hopped....any job I could get...........that shit doesn't happen Today..........

Why work Today when you can make more on unemployment and never have to leave home or have to get out of ya jammies!

I worked 12 hours today and will probably do same tomorrow and for next Month or Two..............Bonus should have gone to the workers...........

What's with the completely off-topic old man rant?

Who cares what you did when you were just a young pup? Hell, PNWest delivered newspapers, shoveled snow, mowed grass and pushed a broom to make $$$ when I was a young whippersnapper. No one cares!
