Interesting look at labor participation

Look at the steady decline during the Obama years and then the beginning upturn exactly matching with the Trump years. Real shame we followed a pandemic drop with a Biden slump. Of course it can only go up, or should. Sure Biden will take credit if does and blame Trump if it doesn't.

  • "The international trade deficit Trump promised to reduce went up. The U.S. trade deficit in goods and services in 2020 was the highest since 2008 and increased 40.5% from 2016.
  • The number of people lacking health insurance rose by 3 million.
  • The federal debt held by the public went up, from $14.4 trillion to $21.6 trillion.
  • Home prices rose 27.5%, and the homeownership rate increased 2.1 percentage points to 65.8%.
  • Illegal immigration increased. Apprehensions at the Southwest border rose 14.7% last year compared with 2016."

As a special bonus the economy lost 2.9 million jobs and the UE rate increased by 1.6%.

Too much MAGA?

It means China paid my taxes via tariffs. Because what I bought from Walmart under Trump, for me at least, did NOT go up. Because of that and good economic times I was able to buy more from abroad. This was actually a positive. ha ha

CHINA PAID MY TAXES!! BUT THE DEMOCRATS PISSED THOSE TAXES AWAY. ha ha

Tariffs are a form of taxes paid by consumers.
Are you surprised Trump lied about that part too?

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/02/heres-why-us-importers-and-consumers-pay-trumps-tariffs-not-china.html
  • China’s government and companies in China do not pay U.S. tariffs directly.
  • Importers often pass the costs of tariffs on to customers - manufacturers and consumers in the United States - by raising their prices.
  • U.S. business executives and economists say U.S. consumers foot much of the tariff bills."

But if the prices stayed the same, as they did for me at WALMART, then CHINA is lumping the TARIFF, duh.

That's only true if you're receiving the same amount of goods for the same price.
For example the brand of instant oatmeal I consume once came in individual packages that required 3/4 of a cup of water to properly prepare. The same brand requires 1/2 cup of water today which indicates each packet contains one-third less product today then it once did even though the price has remained roughly the same. The profit motive is greatly overrated.

I'd never eat oatmeal from China. But that's me. :0)

"China paid my taxes"? No...people buying Chinese stuff paid the tariffs. Who paid for the subsidies Trump gave to farmers hurt by the Chinese retaliation on farm products.

If Trump's economy was so great why didn't the GDP improve by more than what it did under Obama? By the way...any increase you see in GDP while Trump increased defense spending is just smoke and mirrors...

I bought Chinese stuff and the prices stayed the same. Somebody ate that tariff and it wasn't me. Who do you think it was? China? Walmart? Not me.
This is what passes for proof with you....

You bought "chinese stuff"....anything that was being hit with a tarrif? Not all Chinese products were.

What did you buy? Computers? Washing Machines? Solar Panels?

"Overall, the trade war proceeded in five stages between 2018 and 2021.

"The first six months of 2018 featured only a moderate increase in tariffs.

"The months of July through September 2018 resulted in a sharp tariff increase on both sides: US average tariffs increased from 3.8 percent to 12.0 percent, and China's average tariffs increased from 7.2 percent to 18.3 percent.

"In stage three, there was an 8-month period (September 25, 2018, through June 2019) of little change in tariffs.

"From June to September 2019, another set of tariff increases kicked in. In the current stage five, and despite the phase one agreement, tariffs between the two countries remain elevated and are the new normal."

What's the likelihood Biden has any intention of changing that "new normal"?

That article was from 3/16/2021.

While Biden could certainly have canceled Trump's tariffs, would China do the same? It would take negotiations between the two countries. I have no idea if that is happening.

He might be able to ameliorate our current supply chain dilemma?

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/03/politics/global-supply-chain-collapse-biden-tariffs/index.html

"Washington (CNN)There's a quick move President Joe Biden could make to immediately help relieve the stress the pandemic-related supply chain crisis is having on US companies: Lift the tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump.

"Trump put tariffs on roughly $350 billion of Chinese-made goods -- and despite the change in administrations, those duties remain in place.

"American importers have paid more than $106 billion to cover the cost of those levies to date, and many of them are now facing skyrocketing shipping costs."

the tariffs have what to do with the backlog of ships to unload at our ports?

CNN doesn't fail to fail.

If imports increased under Trump's tarriffs pre-covid and if the ships are back logged and anchored outside ports, how does CNN's shuck and jive make sense other than as shuck and jive?

ONLY demented Dems beholding to China could say such a thing. This is the stuff of treason. Of giving Biden political cover to do America economic harm.

I don't understand the Macro either, but there are some capitalists who should know the answer to your question who have thoughts on the subject:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/03/politics/global-supply-chain-collapse-biden-tariffs/index.html

"'Tariff relief is a fast and easy way to help companies hurt most by the shipping crisis stay in business and keep people employed,' said Steve Lamar, president and CEO of the American Association of Apparel and Footwear.

"The trade association sent a letter to the office of the US Trade Representative last week imploring the administration to provide relief from the tariffs.

"It was followed by a similar request from four major manufacturing associations, acknowledging that the supply chain disruptions will require long-term fixes, but argue that tariff removal could provide some immediate relief."

"The tariffs are having a notable impact on trade levels, decreasing both imports and exports, which reduces consumers’ options and further increases prices in the United States."
