I know criticism is coming

My position is that this was a terrible deal. By setting this precedent all the Russians have to do is grab some American that either does nothing illegal or perhaps breaks a minor law like marijuana possession and hold them hostage to exchange for some really nasty Russian criminal.

Another great job by the Biden administration. It's like going into a car dealership and paying MSRP plus a couple of thousand extra for dealer added extras plus a bunch of extra extended warranties. Biden handled this about as well as he has the economy.
There’s only one way to avoid such a problem - stay the hell out of Russia.

Lefties are calling this a big negotiation deal.

For God's sake they just traded an arms dealer known as "The Merchant of Death" for a weed smoking basketball player.
I take it you think Biden should have rejected the deal and allowed Griner to rot away in a Russian gulag. Thankfully, Biden has different values.

Biden should be dealing with Border/Inflation instead of a doper that went to Russia to play roundball

Don't know all the details but news is breaking that the US and Russia have agreed to a prisoner exchange... Britney Griner for some Russian arms dealer. Not an even swap from what I know. It's probably one of the reasons Russia grabbed her and made sure it was such a high profile case. Can't say I agree with the deal.
I'm not getting the acrimony from some in this thread about the swap. I also don't recall it being discussed about how and why the exchange happened. If I missed it, my apologies.

If anyone wants to know, the WH tried, unsuccessfully, to have Whelan in on the trade but the Kremlin said no- it's Griner for the arms dealer- or no deal.

btw, this morning I saw Whelan's brother on CNN praise the WH for at least getting Griner home. So much grace and class.

I think that Biden should never have made that deal. If your are going to exchange someone an arms dealer known as "The Merchant of Death" you ought to have gotten a much bigger fish than a pot smoking woman's basketball player. Like say this guy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Whelan_(security_director)

Face it this was just a publicity stunt and it hurts America down the line because it shows that we will swap truly evil prisoners for minor criminals.

there are no such things as 'even swaps'. there's no upside for anyone to have an american citizen abused in a russian prison. as for the arms dealer, it's not like he can do anything covert anymore. we have his DNA, his fingerprints, his retina scan, his voiceprint. he's essentially unemployable in any capacity.

Points well made and taken.

After thinking about it, I can see where the acrimony may come from. Some think, "well, why not use Whelan, instead of Griner, in the swap?"

I found the answer as to why?

It was a failure in negotiations. The US gave up far, far more because the Russians did a better job than the Biden administration.

The negotiations for Whelan's release hasn't stopped. I think it may be accelerating now after the swap for Griner.

Did you read what Whelan's brother said in the link I posted? If his family is satisfied with the negotiations thus far, I'd like to think that you would be too.

If Biden manages to exchange some minor Russian hoodlum for Whelan then I'll be glad to congratulate him on the deal. But the deal he cut for Griner was abysmal. She had done nothing worse than a misdemeanor if that and was exchanged for "one of the most dangerous men on the face of the Earth " according to the former chief of operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

You think that was a good trade? It was just another Biden failure.

You have no skin in the game. The Whelan family does. I'll take their position on the situation before I do yours.

with the exception of a human bomb. But then we'll know after he kills hundreds that we have his DNA. there is that.
