Spending Cuts, Anyone?

Zam-Zam

Senator
It would be helpful if you actually paid attention to the budget process.

If McCarthy wants to cut spending the place to do it is in the budget that either is in the house or has yet to be submitted. Not in the legislation intended to pay for what Congress already passed.
Are you saying it is impossible to do it now, as both sides negotiate?

I personally believe it can be done. And that it should be done.

No. The republicans are not trying to be fiscally responsible. If they were they'd have voted against tax cuts.
It's not in the repubs' best interest. It affects them in ways they don't want.
Making the wealthy, millionaires/ billionaires pay their share of taxes is a good look politically for Biden and that is another no-no.

I wish you'd think for just a minute about how the budget works. A government agency submits their budget to the White House...the White House incorporates all agency budgets into a federal budget. It is then sent to the House and Senate. They work out what the final budget will be and vote on it...then sending it back to the president to sign.

Federal agencies then plan out how they'll use the money. So at this point the agencies have all committed to projects and hiring levels. Now the republicans want to claw that back. Hell...for the most part the money has been spent and now it is time to pay the bills.

Look at what the republicans want. They want changes to rules related to letting companies mine on federal land. How in hell does that change the federal spending?
They want additional work requirements to qualify for medicaid or food stamps. How much money will we save by doing that?

How about we limit how much money is spent on Trump's legal defense? That must be a big number. If he is convicted could we eliminate his Secret Service protection? Cut his pension?

None of who you've posted changes either one of these two essential facts:

1) It can be done.

2) A lot of people think it should be done.

Very simple.

Read the republican bill and tell how much it will save between now and the end of the fiscal year.

What still amazes me is that the US Government actually borrows money. We have the right to coin and print our own debt free money. We should be lending money, not ever borrowing. Our whole economy is based on a ponzi scheme created by the international banking cartel. Simple logic reveals that the entity borrowing money will never have anything but debt. The entity that lends the money has the real wealth..

Making tax cheats pay will require IRS updates/ more employees/new equipment, etc. and the repubs are against it.

The hecklers were vocal toward AOC for voting to give more aid to Ukraine.

I actually know a lot of Democrats who are against more IRS in our lives. We need spending cuts.

Knowing what to throw away and what to keep is why we are facing the debt ceiling crisis now.

We've gotten ourselves into this mess because both Democrats and Republicans have acted irresponsibly. It seems unlikely that they are the ones who are likely to fix it.

You're missing the point.

No worries.
Nope...clearly you are.

The republican plan pushes some favorite pet projects...like changing the rules to get a permit to mine minerals on federal land. That would have zero effect on federal spending.

I am a fiscal conservative. I would support an effort to force the federal government to be more responsible in spending our money.
1. Federal money for the individual states should be gradually eliminated. If a state wants to fund a project, let them raise taxes on citizens of that state. Pork projects to buy votes is a corrupt practice.
2. Eliminate federal tax deductions for state taxes paid.
3. Means test SS and Medicare payments. They should be safety nets. Gradually reduce payments as other retirement income increases.
4. New rules to limit political gerry mandering are critical. Those setting up districts should not be permitted to view political registration information. I'm not sure if even racial demographics or income should be used, either.

I get your point. It's a familiar theme: Republicans all bad, Democrats all good.

You're missing my point: partisans don't solve problems.

No worries. It's all good.
