Magothy River Melody

The dawn light bathes the willow's cloak
in soft refrains, the senses stroke
and silent shrouds of rolling smoke
along the Magothy at morn'

Canvas visions, bold and sleek
of tacking sloops off Cypress creek
While seabirds play near the Chesapeake
on the Magothy, midday

The sun sinks low 'till out of sight
appointing stars to guard the night
with moonbeam dreams of shimmering light
on the Magothy at eve'

The Magothy is a scenic river that flows into the
Chesapeake Bay a few miles south of Baltimore Maryland

GAWD I LOVE this!!!!
I'm glad you do, Similie. When I lived in Maryland, I drove across a little bridge over the Magothy on most mornings. The fog formed along the banks of the river and reminded me of rolling smoke moving in amongst the willow trees that were growing there. So I wrote a poem about it.

Wow, Jack what a great poem. You really have a talent that I envy.

Very nice. You should stick to writing poetry and give up on the accolades for the republican party. Makes you seem more human.

I really mean it, when I read your poem, I could picture in my mind's eye exactly what you had written. You have a God given talent and you should do more writing, your poem was exceptional and I very much enjoyed reading it.

I give God the credit for it. Poetry is a strange thing. You just never know where it comes from. I have dreamed some poems, and woke up in the middle of the night, went and wrote down what I dreamed, then found it there the next morning, forgetting that I had dreamed it.

Some others I crafted for years. This one, called “Old Road” I started thinking about when I lived in Colorado. I crossed over an old abandoned road while driving on the freeway. I thought about it for many years and finally, about 20 years later, it came to me and I finished it.

Jack, you should publish a book. You are a damn fine writer. How long have you been at this? Did you always like to write? How do you get your ideas? I really like the one called "OLD ROAD" I have often had the same feelings when I saw an old road from the interstate and wondered who that old road carried and where it went. I knew you were a bright man but I had no idea you were such a fine writer. Put some more of your work on here so we can all enjoy it, Please.

I was reading some of your work , Jack, wow, I especially liked Colorado, I have been there and your poem reminded me of the place. You seem to be quite a history buff also. When I was in college I wrote a thesis on the civil war, I read many books and studied many of the great battles, one of the greatest conflicts our nation ever endured, father against son, brother against brother, Shelby Foote is one of my favorite writers on the subject. Only Americans can appreciate what really happened back then, we are truly blessed to be Americans and have such a great history to share with the world.

Well, Jack, I went to Amazon and ordered your book. "Adventures in Time", I look forward to reading it. I had no idea you were a writer let alone a great poet. I would ask you to sign my book but you live to far away. You should write more , Jack, you are blessed with a God given talent only a very few can say they have. I truly envy you.

I am a rabid Civil War buff. I lived in Maryland for about seven years and visited all the battlefields numerous times. I wrote this poem about Antietam and donated to the National Park for their archives.

I have two books called Adventures in Time. Book one is The American Civil War and book two is not quite finished yet; it is called is The American West. they are both fiction. The premise is that I tell stories to my grandkids about how I was a war correspondent in the Civil War and in the Old West. There are some of the chapters on my blog. click on 2007 for the long list of contents. There is one on Gettysburg; Colorado; Little Bighorn; Lee; Grant; and Lincoln.

I am doing the e-book thing with the Civil War book and once I finish the second one it will join the first one there.

I am also trying hard to finish a novel I have been writing for years now. It has 22 chapters and I have about 8 chapters to finish before I start looking for a publisher. If I didn't spend so much time on political discussion boards, I would probably have finished both books by now.
I appreciate your interest. Hope you read some of my stuff and enjoy.

Antietam was one of the bloodiest and costliest battles of the Civil War. Over 30,000 soldiers died in less than one hour. Nearly one quarter of the Confederate Army lost. Your poem captures the essence of long past history, the stone bridge, the sunken road, the sting of battle, the very brave soldiers who died for what they believed in, both blue and grey. The problem in the Civil War as I understand it was that the weapons of the day were way ahead of the tactics of the day, once the mini ball was introduced both sides suffered horrendous looses. The irony of it all is that many of the generals that fought these great battles had attended West Point together and later faced one another on the battlefield. I was recently reading about Sherman, what a colorful figure, he was ruthless and very determined. He would have been the George Patton of his day. Not sure I would have wanted to serve under him though. There were many different personalities that were swept up in great battles that occurred and I find it especially interesting to consider the backgrounds and ponder the personalities of the generals that led their soldiers into the great battles that occurred. Soldiers like Jeb Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, A.P. Hill, George McLullen, and Robert E. Lee. For me the Civil War was the one great defining moment in our nation's history. Perhaps, the one great turning point that defined who we are as Americans.

Let me respectfully correct you. Your comment that over 30,000 soldiers died is a common mistake. That figure represents casualties (dead, wounded, captured, and missing) not battle deaths. 6,000 men, from both sides, died at Antietam in that one day battle. This was the greatest loss of life for Americans, since all who died that day were Ameicans. Even the Normandy invasion and the 9/11 attacks did not result in a greater number of deaths on one day, in our entire history.

That battlefield is one of my favorites.
