Immigrants are allowed to be here despite the law because the economy depends on their being here. The point of the arbitrary immigration restrictions for the ruling class that alone benefits from
them is not to keep immigrants out, but to create a weapon that can be used to coerce them into accepting discriminatory treatment so that their wages and ultimately the wages of all workers can be forced down. The same weapon is used to coerce them into not fighting for equal access to the welfare programs to which labor is entitled by the terms of the social contract, which again pushes wages down; and the laws codifying these rights are enforced as strictly as possible because the ruling class benefits from that sort of strict enforcement, again because cutting benefits to them makes it easier to cut benefits to all, which in turn weakens labor and drives down wages. Cities that are not sanctuary cities violate the law with respect to false imprisonment which is why the lawsuits that are routinely won against them cost taxpayers billions.

Those aren’t “freebies.” They are minimal investment in a more educated, healthier society, without which the epidemics and higher crime and unemployment that would result from getting rid of them would “succeed” in lowering immigration by causing the economy to shrink while making the U.S. a far worse place to live.

Congress doesn’t grant them residency because if they are “illegals” it is easier for big business to discriminate against them thus driving down the wages of all workers. The whole reason the process to immigrate legally is designed to be an interminable Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare is that the powers that be would rather have illegal immigrants than legal immigrants. The solution is general amnesty and legalization. But that solution has to be pushed on an unwilling Congress by a militant labor movement taking aggressive action against any form of discrimination against the foreign-born whether documented or undocumented.

And their labor is absolutely essential to the economy.
