There are two options here. Unnecessarily cause prices to skyrocket, shortages to become common, and people owed by the government for their work not get paid; or take a routine vote with no negative consequences against skyrocketing prices, swindling workers, and shortages. That’s a falsehood. Obama increased the debt by 70%, while cutting the deficit he inherited (largely responsible for the debt increase which was mostly early in his administration) by 53%. Reagan, meanwhile, increased the debt he inherited by 186% while increasing the deficit by 92%. George H. Bush, in 4 years, increased the debt by 55% (an annualized rate 41% higher than Obama’s) and the deficit by 68%. George W. Bush increased the debt by 91% and increased the deficit by 4056% from his first year to his last.

The decision that the debt ceiling would now have to be raised to avoid catastrophic consequences for American workers, farmers, retirees, soldiers, and business owners was made when spending bills were passed over the last 3-5 years. If your issue is with debt, the time to take that up is when passing spending and revenue bills. What Republicans are doing here is the equivalent of if my girlfriend hid the phone so I couldn’t pay the credit card bill because she thought I was spending too much.
