Around 5% of Americans are fans of Ron Paul

That kinda makes sense, if we think in terms of that 5% coming randomly from the 4 corners of our huge country. BUT...what I can't figure out is how this godamned loon is able to attract sufficient support - presumably at least 50%+1 - from just one Congressional District in Texas, in order to get himself elected?

Here's a fun piece on Paul, from one of Li'l George's former speechwriters:

well, you know Libertarians.....they're all about smoking dope and getting layed. FREE_DOM is their buzz word so that appeals to the pseudo-anarchists.

Paul spices it up for the anti-abortion bunch with his forced-birth position (which I thought was antithetical to FREE_DOM).

anyway, the R label gets him elected easily in TX. and who knows, he may provide good constituent service.

What I can't figure out is if any of his adherents is listening to what he actually says, or are they just drawn to the fact that he says the opposite of what everyone else is saying?

Paul was one of the "kings of pork" for his district. From 2007:

Houston Chronicle:

U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Lake Jackson, the Libertarian-leaning contender for the Republican presidential nomination, long has waged war on the widespread federal spending he views as outside constitutional boundaries.

But the congressman, who often votes against spending bills, including funds for the Iraq war, leads the Houston-area delegation in the number of earmarks, or special funding requests, that he is seeking for his district. He is trying to nab public money for 65 projects, such as marketing wild shrimp and renovating the old movie theater in Edna that closed in 1977 — neither of which is envisioned in the Constitution as an essential government function.

Well, that just shows that he's "flexible".

Lots of Ron Paul supporters seem naive....They think America can go back in time to 1912 or something...They have no idea what America was really like ...in 1912
