Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed funding for the Texas state Legislature after Democrats in the state House blocked the Republican-backed election reform bill.

This follows through with a threat he made at the end of May when Democrats blocked S.B. 7 by walking out of the regular legislative session, meaning the House did not have a quorum and therefore could not pass the bill. Among other changes, the bill would create new rules for mail-in voting and provide more access to poll watchers.

"Texans don’t run from a legislative fight, and they don’t walk away from unfinished business," Abbott said in a statement, according to CBS 11. "Funding should not be provided for those who quit their job early, leaving their state with unfinished business and exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session. I therefore object to and disapprove of these appropriations."

Unless the matter is resolved, Democrat and Republican state legislators and their staff will stop getting paid after Aug. 31. Lawmakers are paid $600 per month and an extra $221 for every day they are in session, according to the Texas Tribune.

"Texas has a governor, not a dictator or emperor," said Chris Turner, chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, in a Friday statement. "The tyrannical veto of the legislative branch is the latest indication that Governor Greg Abbott is simply out of control."

"Abbott’s actions are an inexcusable and dangerous attack on the separation of powers, as his veto consolidates more power in his own office," he added.

Abbot said he would call a special session on the matter, though a date for one has yet to be set.

They had the chance to get the job done, chose not to do it. They don't deserve pay.

Let's remind everybody what you don't want.

Relating to election integrity and security, including by preventing fraud in the conduct of elections in this state; increasing criminal penalties; creating criminal offenses.
TX SB7 | 2021-2022 | 87th Legislature | LegiScan

Bottom line:

You want election fraud.

Case closed.

Normally I oppose such autocratic idiocy, but I’m torn - putting the Texas legislature out of commission might be a good thing. They can’t pass their election-rigging laws.

White Spring

Next step: nullification. Third step: secession.

The Right is always right
So if Biden "defunded" Congress for refusing to pass his favorite legislation, you'd be ok with that?
Dems in Congress allowed the government to be shut down multiple times......denying paychecks to federal employees.....in attempts to block Trump’s budgets and you ooked and awed like am emasculated ape throwing shit. Difference is these are legislators, not everyday Americans, losing checks. They get checks as soon as they do their jobs.. Feel retarded, yet?

It seems you forgot the shutdowns during Clinton's years or Obama's. The republicans refused to pass a budget to avoid funding the Affordable Care Act...that lasted 15 days.

Dems refused to pass Trump's budget because of his funding for the wall, which he had said would be paid for by Mexico....

The issue in Texas would be identical to telling congress we will not fund the legistlature, either the Senate or the House, until you vote on a bill.

How about if Obama had done that when McConnell refused to hold a vote on Garland?

So it's alright to lockdown the government and deny paychecks to millions of federal employees if it's over an issue YOU agree with it (ie. block border wall funding)? But not alright to deny paychecks to elected legislators if they refuse to do their job(vote on legislation introduced on election security)?

You sound like a bigger fool with each post.

Are you claiming Obama had the choice to renege on budgets that were already passed by Congress and signed? Now THAT would be a dictator. ROFL. Foolish one. A governor has the authority not to sign any bill the state legislature puts before him. So does a President with Congress. In fact, vetoing or not signing bills is a tactic long used by both to get concessions from the legislative bodies. Democrats know this better than anyone as they've done it since the country's founding. Obama couldn't have blocked funding to Congress. He did veto the spending bill in 2015, however, to try to twist the arms of legislators. Garland was in an election year for a deadbeat going out the door. He had no ability at that point. Your hypocrisy is sickening. Okay to strike paychecks from millions of innocent American workers for your "cause" but claim conspiracy when legislators get their checks docked for something they have full power to prevent.

Evil lives.

SO it seems Trump was willing to deny paychecks to millions of federal employees to preserve funding for a wall he promised that Mexico would pay for?

The governor is holding funding for the legislature, not just hte democrats and his threat is to stop the work of the Texas legislature because the democrats refuse to vote on his bizarre election bill.

Trump said he would take responsibility for the shutdown, when it was Democrats he couldn’t compromise with as opposed to when it was Republicans. Anyway, the legislators are being punished for doing their jobs, for obeying their oaths of office in fact.

That’s not what Abbott is doing (simply withholding assent to legislation). He is refusing to release money that has been appropriated by law.
