Some don't seem to understand the difference between taking reasonable precautions and fear mongering.

I'm not sure why fear mongering even got into this conversation.

If I were to give you a few tips on how to avoid muggers, purse snatchings, car jackings or other forms of assaults while you vacationed in Chgo, would you accuse me of fear mongering?

I feel I am much more likely to be hurt by people in the good old usa who are citizens than anyone from outside of our country.

Holy crap! I can't believe you actually posted that and meant it. You think that grief is different among the survivors because one murder spree was done with a jet plane and another was done with a pistol while the murderer went from victim to victim, while they prayed not to die?

What would it take to be significant? If the Major had used a flame thrower instead would that work?

Dave, don't take this the wrong way, but a question such as this requires more than just a poll, I'd love to know the motivation behind it.

On the subject of safety, Americans or people I should tend to react badly to looming threats or perceived threats, The New York Sun published a series of articles resplendent with beautiful pictures titled "Moon People" a fanciful series of articles dedicated to the discovery of moon people, their habits, their society etc.
Unfortunately this occurred before the Civil War, and given the heightened sense of anxiety, people believed it.

And as you probably know, Mercury Theater in the 30's broadcasted "War of the Worlds" again on the verge of a war, and of course people believed it.

What I believe is we still have people suffering from the PTDS of 9/11 and the Belief system people have, there's socialists under the bed, Obama is a covert muslim sent here to destroy our way of life, reminds of the moon people and of course the alien invasion in '33.

I think people still suffer from 9/11, and I am not sure if they are able to acertain whether they are safe or not.
They are too busy observing "effigies".

In the years following 9/11, I was always amazed when people on the Fray, who claimed to be from small towns scattered around the rural areas, would talk about how they feared they could be killed at any moment by a terrorist attack. Some perspective, people. You live in fricking Otter Creek. The Post Office, drug store, supermarket, and gas station are all 1 building. With 4 aisles. Yeah, you're right at the top of the terrorist hit list.
Good one. I do not live in Otter Creek,we do have plenty of stores and banks, but the town also has old fashioned lights that look like the gas lights and brick sidewalks. Started by the German Baptists who still live here. So,no I am not worried at all.

I'm not worried because I carry a gun , and if the damn government was on their game I would have a state paid stinger missle launcher strapped to my back and phone in hand just waiting for the call:) We are supposed to be a nation of heavily armed pyschopaths because THAT IS national security , not locking up people for no good cause or a weak one. I live below a muslim family and I am more worried about the tratiors in washington then my wonderful muslim friends. We as a nation cause these threats and do things to make more threats , kinda the same people crying we have no money because they stole it all.

If our country would go back to our old ways with the modern twist we would be fine. Don't want to hear about the racist , gender discrimination ways , just the style of leadership. We have all the pieces all we need to do is make it know no matter how different you are in the eyes of the law everyone is the same , and if anyone ever bothered to read the delcration of independance and the bill of rights it is worded in such a way as we could now truely reap the rewards of such a system and be the envy of all other nations.

Star for this part (not for the missile)

Moderately for me. Until we manage to do more with our security agencies (FBI/CIA) working together without all the internal turf wars they have we will get no better at domestic security. The creation of Homeland Security was a good idea gone awry. The TSA is a joke, as is the never ending war on drugs.

If we really want to secure this country from an Islamic extremist attack we will start to distance ourselves from Israel. Iran might like to wipe out Israel, but for years we have seen how Israel reacts to both real and perceived threats. Let them fight it out on their own, get ourselves off our addiction to oil (both foreign and domestic,) and stop trying to force our way of "democracy" on the rest of the world's nations.

More Americans die from food poisoning every year than died in the 9/11 attacks, but we can't go to war against leftovers. Simply wearing my seatbelt when I drive offers a much greater level of personal security than does the so-called Patriot Act.

Lapcat,

Not being a smartass here, how would you secure the borders? Remember, there's 102,514 miles of border to be patrolled. That includes the borders with Canada (5,525 miles), Mexico (1,989 miles), and the coastlines (95,000 miles).
Notice you never got an answer to your question?....that's the AM Radio/Hannitized "Scared Stiff" vote in the poll.

They don't even feel more at ease with a Republican President...since the GOP has to keep people at a heightened state of fear to win politically.

"War Is Peace"

If I said 'Extremely' I'd be lying. "they" only have to be lucky once we have to be lucky all the time. Now if only we had air ports block parking so close to the terminals again and bring back the color coded terror alert I would have said "Extremely"!

That is true, BUT...if the Terrorists were SMART, and, IF they really understood American Life and Media/Information flow in the West, they could spread a lot of terror in attacking targets other than simply New York (which is obviously, the Top of most any Terror List..), Washington, etc.

Case in point, the Domestic Terror Attacks at Columbine, and Oklahoma City.

But, of course, SMALLER targets, while less protected, also have their challenges.

Now, IF and WHEN they get a WMD, tactics may then change, depending on the WMD. I mean, while New York City would again be their #1 target, IF that is too difficult, a major attack on Indianapolis, New Orleans, Charleston, SC, etc. would create just as much terror and shock, if not as many deaths....

They are spreading it out... Look at the ones we caught trying and the shootings at our bases, the DC Beltway and folks in Arizona.
They would stand out more in Small Town America more though but then again we've been lucky...

Request for Dave & Chris

Make the poll results as far as who voted for what visible AFTER we vote.

I'm dying to know who's "scared stiff" ;-)
