What countries that successfully lowered the death toll did was to interrupt transmission.
... which only prolongs the plague. (poetic license... I know it isn't a plague... or is it? Time will determine that)

Thing is, we don't know if this virus was interrupted in the least. In my own humble opinion, this thing was already spread everywhere before they tried to interrupt it and those efforts at social distancing generally happened on the back side of the curve anyway, I don't think it was ever stopped or even slowed down. Sweden concentrated on their elderly, tried to protect them, and they were already locked down in nursing homes, and still failed miserably.

Nothing stops a virus.
