You want to have it both ways … when judging whether leaders “are” communists, it’s based on what they say, not what they do. But when judging the “experimental results” you base it on what the worst of those same leaders do, not the results of doing what they say should be done (which in the current period of communism’s infancy and vulnerability to capitalistic deformation is often quite different from what they do).

The point is that “communist” has an objective meaning, and Stalin and his political heirs red-washing their opportunistic service of the bureaucracy (or direct service to the capitalist class in the case of Pol Pot, Deng, Xi, etc.) by fraudulently laying claim to the mantle of Lenin doesn’t make it so.

Very doubtful, but regardless their subjective beliefs don’t obviate that under Stalin control of the government passed from the working class to middle-class bureaucrats, and under Deng China went from being dominated by a socialist mode of production to a capitalist mode of production (and nothing has changed since).
