In the 1928 election, the major-party candidates were successful Republican Herbert Hoover, and runner-up Democrat Al Smith. One of the chief issues in the election was the recently enacted Prohibition. Hoover, a "Dry," supported maintaining Prohibition. Smith, a "Wet," supported repealing Prohibition. So, naturally, one of his leading campaign slogans was, I kid you not:
"Vote for Al Smith and make your wet dreams come true!"
"Vote for Al Smith and make your wet dreams come true!"
