In an advanced society, you would think that after 4 years of clearly incompetent leadership, governance, a period where we rejected science, rejected art, rejected advancement on every front...the man and his followers would be driven out of the society on the whole. It makes me worry about the long term prospects for the US when you still have a lot of people who think he was a decent person much less some sort of brilliant steward of the ship of state.

The stagflation began under Nixon and continued through most of the Ford administration until the economy started expanding again. That it came back later under Carter mostly speaks to how truly hot the economy was at the time, that even the ruthless use of deflationary fiscal policy to induce a recession didn't really begin to put a dent in the high rate of inflation until the Reagan administration when even an ultra-inflationary policy was barely enough to keep up with the collapse of industry and of American economic hegemony.
That's absurd. Wall Street crashed on the anticipation of mass death and staffing issues, quite a while before politicians caught up and started talking seriously about sheltering in place for 2 weeks here or 2 months there.
That's not really true. For one, there was NEVER any federal obstacle to states being stupid. For another, we just saw a study posted that the states with the best economies were the ones that had had longer lockdowns and more rigorous mask mandates. And, of course, it was not "fear mongering" so much as the virus that killed 400,000 that caused people not to want to go out to eat, shop unnecessarily, or vacation.
That study was published without peer review. Trump didn't do as poorly with Covid as he did with the 2017 hurricanes, I was pleasantly surprised but that was based on my expectations for him. But almost any politician you can think of would have done a better job.
