When I was Twenty-One

When I Was Twenty-One

There was a time, I tell you true
O’er furrowed fields of morning dew
On Neptune wings I fairly flew
Through skies of iridescent blue
When I was twenty-one

And there were days when, all in all
The world’s demands seemed meager, small
I questioned not tomorrow’s call
But that was long before the fall
When I was twenty-one

There was a time, you too must know
When a pretty face in twilight’s glow
Could steal the heart and warm the soul
Ah, but that was so very long ago
When I was twenty-one

And there was a time, I used to say
When absolutes and naiveté
Were stripped and scarred
And blown away
In Dealey Plaza one November day
When I was twenty-one

And there were times, I’m not sure how
When failures life would disallow
And soft sweet hands would cool my brow
But I just can’t remember now
When I was twenty-one
