yep, I've always thought this

which is why I've long thought BHO ignoring his "base" as some have percieved it, was/is a mistake.

Without going through the list of things that have been percieved as such or the level of disappointment that has resulted, or even the impact the lack of enthusiasm this could potentially have on the election result, I'd simply assert that the "center" is really comprised of those who generally speaking, vote pretty much one way anyway most of the time. A large segment of his base is in the so-called center, as is the case for repubs as well.

This is why I've been looking for "CONverts" who simply can no longer support rightwingnuttery in its current form, which I think he can push over the edge with his current "jobs, etc," econ tactics. Cultish rightwingers love to talk about all the economic devastation by his hand like the memories of what put him into office -- the devastation largely from him and the repubs -- while many of their own are still living it, or in the alternative, are the recipients of a job that failed "stimulus" provided.

This is nothing new really.

Rove also understood the myth of the middle: the illusion that appealing to the center was the correct strategy to win elections. This accepted truism of moderating positions to appeal to the center in general elections became false in a reduced and polarized electorate.

It's why I question the self-designation of most moderates/centrists, and those of the rightwing persuasion that lay claim to both sides screwing us equally, etc, particularly amusing, when the historical record shows in terms of economy which produces the most benefits to the most Americans/little guys in terms of jobs, etc, that they vote CONsistently against. It's almost like they see themselves as or a step away from 1%erhood or something, or that taxing that group more will kill the profit, etc motive like it did in the past, which will adversely effect them should the "trickle down" current be diminished -- well, their fictional past in their current unreality anyway. That's why they're wholly supportive of those who wanna piss in the stream they'll then shower in, assuming there's any downward flow "this time" around. WHat's that definition of insanity again?

But then, for most of my time involved in politics that's pretty much the only thing I've seen rightwingers successful at -- excluding lying us into wars and assorted other abominations -- convincing so many to vote against their own self-interests based on the "big gov" bogeyman. http://dirtyhippies.org/2012/01/08/so-who-are-the-welfare-junkies/

Obviously they'd rather spend money on empire for their own enrichment than we the people. After all, if God didn't want hunger and assorted other forms of human misery to persist, he'd shower them with manna, and kill more doctors lest they keep up with the need http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/we-have-more-doctors-per-capita-than-ever-before/2011/12/16/gIQAKIfByO_blog.html.

Or suffer the fate many others with higher education have http://gizmodo.com/5671062/there-are-5000-janitors-in-the-us-with-phds in this great land of diminishing socio-economic mobility. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/05/economic-mobility-us-lagging-behind-canada-europe_n_1185903.html all that trickling down has provided.

"c" y'all

New Research: Appealing To The Center Is Not The Way To Win Elections
58 commentsBy Susie Madrak
Dave Johnson wrote a great piece back in May showing that appealing to the center actually drives away voters. Now he finds more evidence to support his position:

On NPR's Talk of the Nation today, Clarence Page talked with host Neal Conan about the role of independent voters, saying that we might be surprised to learn that candidates who try to appeal to "independents" tend to lose, because they turn off the voters who closely follow and care about the issues.

In fact, candidates who try to "appeal to the center" lose, because this idea of a "center" is a myth. From the transcript:

this is nothing new, i used to save guys jobs at work that were fired in all reality, except for my ability to fight a good fight for them, who would turn right around and bash the union and me and try to tell people that they should vote republican.

It was guns, gays and God and the fact that they thought that they were better a employee who was being held back. Right they were so lucky to have a job it was funny.

yep, I had that experience for a number of years myself 8, and it was always deeply mystifying to me why it was that same type had no problem paying for home, car, or for part of their health care premiums, but found the kind of insurance we provided -- assuring they had a job to pay those bills with -- so objectionable.

It only goes to show the power of the propaganda and the cult-like mentality it produces behind that "voting against their self-interest" thingy
