Prediction: EMTALA Repeal the next hot issue.

"Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA)

In 1986, Congress enacted the Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) to ensure public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay. Section 1867 of the Social Security Act imposes specific obligations on Medicare-participating hospitals that offer emergency services to provide a medical screening examination (MSE) when a request is made for examination or treatment for an emergency medical condition (EMC), including active labor, regardless of an individual's ability to pay. Hospitals are then required to provide stabilizing treatment for patients with EMCs. If a hospital is unable to stabilize a patient within its capability, or if the patient requests, an appropriate transfer should be implemented."

Since this act signed into law by Ronald Reagan with huge majorities is the basis for the free rider condition, the obvious thing for tea baggers is to get rid of the free riders by repealing this act. This would likely save us around 50 billion a year in unfunded emergency care to people without insurance including the horrific births by illegal baby mama's whose offspring emerge as American citizens. The horror this act has created for the nation is immense. Gone were the days when uninsured people would be left on the sidewalks to die or give birth in alleys. Gone were the days when EMTs asked for insurance before transporting accident victims to emergency rooms. By repealing this law, the right wing will derail a lapse in our moral fabric that enabled laziness and irresponsibility. You watch the right wingers start in on this sooner or later. And they will all pray to Jesus to make it so because all of us know Jesus never healed anyone without insurance. Says so right in the Old Testament somewhere. I know, Jesus doesn't show up for a couple thousand years but we all know where he stood on this issue. Let them die, it's Gods Will.

Question: What do you think of the abusers that use the ER's for their kids headcolds and earaches?

Should there be a penalty for abuse of the ER?
