US National General Strike on 2/17/17

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-general-strike-us-president-day-when-activists-national-facebook-twitter-a7558851.html

Unlike other Democracies the US has never embraced a national strike where a majority of citizens refuse to shop, go to work and school, and otherwise behave in a business-as-usual manner.

Perhaps on 2/17 that will change, revealing what happens when a crony-capitalist tries to run government like a business?

"Activists are calling for people to stop working and buying things for a day to bring down Donald Trump.

"A national general strike across the US is being called for 17 February – the Friday before President's Day – as a way of protesting the new administration.

"Those behind the strike hope that they can cause enough disruption to bring about change in the political system."

I predict the strike will be a complete failure.

General strikes have not been successful in the US before Trump.

"The United States has the most violent labor history of any major industrial country. General and other large-scale strikes in the US have nearly always been met with major repression, from police, National Guard, even federal troops.

"For instance, the general strike in San Francisco of 1934, which developed out of a longshoremen’s strike, led to running battles with the police, National Guardsmen setting up machine gun nests and tanks for strike suppression, and a number of deaths."

It would be a YUGE mistake to underestimate the Liar-in-Chief.

So a bunch of largely unemployed or lazy employees are going to do what they usually do...nothing.....

Gee yeah that will disrupt things.

That's a good point, and it's one being echoed by some prominent leftists:

https://www.jacobinmag.com/2017/02/general-strike-donald-trump-womens-march-immigration-ban-ludlow-strike/

"Calling for a general strike now bears no relation to what mass strikes have meant in the past. The flight from reality shows up in activists’ blasé attitude to history and their very distant relationship to the working class.

"The United States has the most violent labor history of any major industrial country. General and other large-scale strikes in the US have nearly always been met with major repression, from police, National Guard, even federal troops."

Trump is changing politics very quickly in the US.

Some of his opponents are probably over-reacting to his tweets and ignoring some golden opportunities:

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/lawsuit-9-11-families-saudis-israel-234700

"Congress overrode President Barack Obama's veto last year to pass a law making it easier for families of Sept. 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia — but now a Washington lawyer is using it to target Israel instead.

"In a 103-page complaint filed Feb. 1, attorney Martin F. McMahon alleges that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as U.S. charities tied to President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Trump's Israel ambassador pick David Friedman, are complicit in war crimes against Palestinians because of their financial support for settlement activity in the West Bank."

Never underestimate

the Liar in Chief.;)
I am not. Aside from the fact that I had hoped he would begin to be more polished and a better public speaker I have gotten exactly what I wanted.
Not only has he pissed lefties off and made them openly show they are the radical left wing that those of us who are moderates have always thought they were, he has nominated an originalist and school choice supporter as well as a atty gen who will put to end the nonsense of doj as lefty agenda enforcer. No this is exactly what I hoped for and expected. I realize that people actually doing what they say they will is a foreign concept to lefty but it's how things actually get done among the productive.

Or not...as some businesses support their worker's complex lives...

When one of Howie Barokas’ employees asked to take time off to protest US President Donald Trump’s policies in Washington DC, he didn’t just give a simple nod of approval.

Not only did Barokas, who runs a Seattle-based public relations firm, give her the day off from work without taking it from her paid time off allotment, but the company sent her off with a gift; a “protest kit” that included hand warmers, gloves, a marker pen and poster board...

...“We’re not going to impose our political beliefs on employees, but we believe that activism is important,” and he wants employees to feel he supports their activism, he says.

He’s not alone. More companies — including Starbucks, Lyft, Google and Apple — are speaking out against policies put in place by Trump. These companies and others are beginning to believe that they also need to accommodate employees who also feel the need to be heard.

Silicon Valley companies have been especially vocal in the short time since the 20 January inauguration ceremonies. For instance, on 30 January, an estimated 2,000 Google employees joined co-founder Sergey Brin and chief executive Sundar Pichai to protest a presidential executive order on immigration...

"Will the anti-Trump protests expand? That’s more likely than ever before"

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/02/06/will-the-protests-continue-thats-more-likely-than-ever-before/?utm_term=.f55de06d0007

"On Nov. 8, Donald Trump won the presidency with just over 57 percent of Electoral College votes.

"But as has been repeated often since then, he fell far short of receiving the support of a majority of Americans.

"He won less than half of the popular vote, and only about half of eligible voters bothered to cast their ballots.

Those upset with Trump’s executive orders and proposed policies know they have company. And in case they had any question about it, the large protests and flood of calls jamming congressional phone lines have put those doubts to rest.

Will these actions and expressions of outrage continue? That hinges on how individual Americans think others feel and what they know about what others will do. Online social networks have made it far easier than was true even a few years ago for individuals to quickly learn about what others plan to do.

IF those who voted Hillary go on strike and those who voted Trump do not - what part of your economy will be affected? How will the country be damaged or disrupted?

Is he draining the swamp to your moderate satisfaction?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/10/donald-trump-drain-swamp-cabinet-picks-billionaires

"Donald Trump's talk of 'draining the swamp' rings hollow"

"A selection of Goldman Sachs brass past and present as well as some unqualified (and wealthy) nominees leaves one to wonder how long his honeymoon with his working-class constituency will last."

I don't believe it's quite as straightforward as Hillary v Trump voters. Hillary received about 3 million more votes than Trump. The Green and Libertarian Party candidates collectively received another 5 million. Half of all eligible voters did not bother to cast a ballot. Social media has changed how Trump communicates with his base as well as how his critics organize against his policies. A one day General Strike that takes place on a winter holiday (President's Day) won't have much affect on the US economy; however, if it draws support from millions of Americans, it will lay the groundwork for more meaningful actions, perhaps during the next Christmas shopping season, assuming Trump hasn't cut and run before that time.
