From my book: Dreams of a Forgotten Man.

Dreamcatcher
I met a man from Magothy
Who spoke in riddles and rhymes
And carried his dreams in a canvas bag
That he opened from time to time
He sat beneath a willow tree
On the road to AldenBay
And told his tales to the Nightingales
At the close of every day
He beckoned me, “draw near, young man
I’ll catch you a dream or two
The cost is naught, for I perceive
That your heart is straight and true”
“What would you have if all the world
Were yours and yours alone?
Wine, cheese, and bread, and a featherbed
Or a garden of precious stones?”
Wisdom, I said, seems all but fair
I would know the hearts of men
He smiled as if he knew my mind
“well done”, he said, “begin”
“One thing I’ve learned and one thing more
The worst reveals the best
Think not yourself more than you are
And likewise none the less”
“The poor man lives but for today,
While the rich man makes his plans
He turns his head and earns his keep
From the sweat of other hands”
“Leave not the pauper in his place
Nor the rich man in his way
For the poor have hope of tomorrow
But the haughty have only today”
“Entreat the two just as the same
Be quick to make assess
For many are more than they seem to be
And many more are less”
“Watch well a man, turn not away
Look deep into his eyes
For the eyes, if known, confirm his words
And reveal his thoughts and lies”
“Be not above the lowly man
Nor stand below the great
Catch the poor man by his want
And the rich by his estate”
I turned away and left him there
Beneath his willow tree
Telling his tales to the Nightingales
While I pondered his words to me
One thing I’ve learned and one thing more
And all that I’ve perceived
All I have known and called my own
Is all that I received
From a man I met from Magothy
Who spoke in riddles and rhymes
And carried his dreams in a canvas bag
That he opened from time to time
