UAW On Strike

I thought this was interesting:

The 32-hour workweek is on the bargaining table as the United Auto Workers (UAW) negotiate a new contract. Under the proposal, workers would put in 32 hours and get paid for 40 hours; they would receive overtime pay for work beyond 32 hours.

UAW Pushes for 4-Day, 32-Hour Workweek (shrm.org)

I wonder if they'll get that.

I wonder how long the strike will go on, and how much of an impact it will have on the US economy.

I wonder how long before the government gets involved.

I wonder if they are turning cartwheels over at Honda, Toyota, Tesla, et. al.

Time will tell. This will be interesting to watch.

For my money, I've never found a better book series about why strikers win and why they lose than the 4-part Teamster series (Teamster Rebellion, Teamster Power, Teamster Politics, Teamster Bureaucracy) by Farrell Dobbs.

Walter Reuther: Biography of an Opportunist by Beatrice Hansen is also particularly relevant to this struggle.

Who buys $60/70 thousand dollar automobiles anymore and once driven off dealership loses $10,000+. not I nor will I ever again. My daily driver is a 1999 loaded Z71 4X4 I bought 4 years back for $4500 and it like new and really better than new (no recalls)
I learned many years back never buy a Union auto made on Monday or Friday, evidently they were hung over or in a hurry to start a new hangover.

I'm sure are neck deep in debt so when the big 3 close, let's see how they pay their Bills

I expect to be seeing more KIA's on the road

Uncle "Union Joe" makes %400,00 plus freebies and a private jet for working 30 hours a week and they want to be equal to Uncle Union Joe, evidently

Update:

Auto CEOs Struggling With Whether To Replace Striking Workers With Robots Or Mexicans

DETROIT, MI — With UAW workers officially on strike to demand a 4-day, 32-hour work week, leadership with the Big Three automakers are reportedly struggling with whether to replace the union workers with robots or Mexicans.

"We really could go either way on this," said Ford CEO Jim Farley while lighting up a Cuban cigar with a stack of $100 dollar bills. "On one hand, robots work perfectly and tirelessly without complaining around the clock. On the other hand, President Biden is welcoming thousands and thousands of Mexicans across the border every day who will happily do these jobs for 32 cents per hour, 70 hours per week. What to do?"

"This is a real conundrum."

According to reports, there are currently 32,000 illegal migrants patiently waiting outside the picket line to take the place of the autoworkers while providing a superior work ethic for pennies on the dollar.

"We are tired of greedy corporations taking advantage of the American worker," said UAW President Shawn Fain. "We demand infinity money for less work forever. And we want to work from home. We believe this is more than reasonable."

At publishing time, automaker leadership elected to compromise and go with the robots but hire Mexicans to build them.

I say go with both. Hire a bunch of illegals to do the work until you can get a machine in there to take their place, then train the illegals on maintaining and programming these machines. Win/win in my book.

How about “robot Mexicans”? The best of both worlds…it’s win-win.

I, for one, welcome our hispanic automaton overlords.

Gee, if Mexicans were allowed to come across and have equal rights with native-born citizens with no fear of deportation, the auto bosses couldn't get away with paying them low wages to undercut union workers, whose power comes from the dependence the bosses have on them. Which is why discrimination against the foreign-born means lower wages for all workers. If it were cheaper to use more robots (besides the many that the auto workers already use to build cars), they would already have been doing so.

evidently the UAW are not among the 60% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck. What does one do in Detroit with a 3 day weekend, though? Especially in winter? Pistons game? 12 pack at home while logged into an online betting site?

It would mean that companies with more reasonable attitudes toward the union would have to take their place or see their ability to produce wrecked as well. Look at the Eastern Airlines strike where the machinists and other unions won by driving the airline out of business and were able to negotiate stronger contracts with other airlines.

By the Babylon Bee. I agree. If the workers didn’t have all the power in the negotiation (since the bosses bring nothing to the table, objectively speaking, since they are dependent on labor for the production of all their tools, machinery, knowledge, and products), the auto makers wouldn’t be desperately trying to pull the wool over their eyes this way.
