Meanwhile, back at the war...

I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive.
A senior Ukrainian government official told The Washington Post that Kyiv doesn’t have the resources to pull off a big counteroffensive in the coming months as Ukraine is lacking skilled troops, munitions, and other equipment.

“If you have more resources, you more actively attack,” said the official, who spoke to the Post on the condition of anonymity. “If you have fewer resources, you defend more. We’re going to defend. That’s why if you ask me personally,
I don’t believe in a big counteroffensive for us. I’d like to believe in it, but I’m looking at the resources and asking, ‘With what?’

War is a nasty business and this one could have and should have been avoided. Ukraine can't win and Russia can't lose - that is a prescription for endless bloodshed.

Two questions:

Why was it so vitally important to run NATO right up to Putin's front door?

Any war cheerleaders ready to step up and admit they were wrong?

The Chinese (and Putin) are laughing their asses off - we're weakening ourselves militarily and financially all in one fell swoop (while they get stronger)! Heck of a job, Brandony...

China loves this and it's not because they have some undying love for the Russians. The longer this goes on, the more money we spend, the more equipment we send, the weaker we get.

Our military is in no position to fight a two front war.

Strategic suicide, that is what this is and the CCP could not be happier.

A counteroffensive would be nice if feasible, but Ukraine can easily still win by withstanding Russia’s attack until Russia runs out of ammunition and political capital. NATO expansion was pursued in the time of Clinton/Bush and early in the Obama administration—not so much since—as a means of attacking socialism in E. Europe and Russia, and facilitating its replacement by triumphally capitalist regimes like Putin’s. But when Russia invaded Ukraine, it had borders with 4 NATO members, of which Ukraine was not one, and was the object of no serious plans to make it one. NATO has certainly been revitalized by Putin’s invasion, but it played much less role in starting the war than Russia’s internal political crisis (and the accompanying threat of imminent socialist restoration if the populace is allowed a moment’s peace to regroup from the interns class war of which Putin’s external wars are extensions) and the desire to press the temporary advantage gained by Trump steering the U.S. and its allies into a ditch.

Ukraine could have all the troops it could need just by organizing Russian dissidents. The first step to making that a realistic possibility is breaking up the nationalist/fascist militia and putting their members in dispersed units under regular command.

Russia also has to worry about the imminent possibility of new fronts being opened in Georgia, Moldova, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Dagestan, the Tambov, Siberia, etc., by nations and classes oppressed by Moscow and seeking to take advantage of its weakness.

The ruling class that put Biden in power think it is worth it to undermine Russia (and the U.S. has been pinching every penny spent on aid). Meanwhile, if the oppressive U.S. government is weakened, every friend of liberty will rejoice.

I see the DNC Press Secretary is back at it. Russian expansionism under Obama (Democrat)…pauses under Trump (non-Democrat)…explodes again under Biden (Democrat). Nice work, Mr. Secretary.

Hundreds of Ukrainian Troops May Be Trapped in Bakhmut Tunnels (msn.com)

I read somewhere that Putin had offered to allow the evacuation of the remaining Ukrainian civilians and troops in Bakhmut. I also read that the West was urging Zelensky to do a "strategic" retreat. He decided to keep fighting. Looks like that probably wasn't a good decision.
Just a few years ago we watched Russia and its Syrian allies double-cross and massacre Syrian civilians who were given essentially the same promises. Only a complete moron would let Russia repeat the same tactic and mass-murder its way to breathing space it desperately needs before its badly undersupplied forces start mutinying.

The expansionist logic of Russia’s imperialist aims (and the occupation of Crimea and much of the Donbas) never ceased. What changed was that Russia’s strategy temporarily shifted from military offensives against Ukraine to intelligence offensives to take advantage of the unprecedented (since the 1940s with the Soviets) support for Russia in the U.S. and particularly at the top levels, thus laying the groundwork for an offensive that would be launched when the U.S. and its allies were at their weakest (when Russia no longer could count on its dupe in the White House to continue making the U.S. weaker and weaker) … an offensive on a scale that would have been impossible in Obama’s time, before 4 years of Trumpism substantially altered the balance of power in Russia’s favor.
