A hundred and twelve years ago, in 1907...our [ not mine] great grandparents were first able to buy the rifle pictured. The semi-auto Winchester Model 1907.
This is a gun they could buy from a Sears catalogue and have delivered via US Post. It was/ is a semi-automatic, high powered centerfire rifle, with detachable, high capacity magazine.
About 400,000 semi-automatic rifles were produced before WW2. Civilians had hundreds of thousands of these for 40 years, while US soldiers were still being issued old fashioned bolt action rifles.
The 1907 fired just as fast as an AR15 or AK47 and the bullet (.351 Winchester) was actually larger than those fired by the more modern looking weapons..
The ONLY functional difference between the 1907 and a controversial and much feared AR15 is the modern black plastic stock.
The semi auto, so-called "assault rifle" is 110 years old. It isnt new in any way.
The semi auto rifle was not a weapon of war. The government MADE IT a weapon of war 40 years after civilians had them.
The semi-auto can be safely owned by civilians. The proof is that literally 3 generations of adults owned and used them responsibly and no one ever even noticed.

In 1907 you could order a couple ampules of pure heroin in a handsome leather case with a couple syringes and stainless steel needles for $1.98 too. A few years later, the US government rethought that practice and banned Sears from selling that kit.

Weapons such as the one pictured have been around longer than any of us. It is human behavior that has changed, and any program or piece of legislation that fails to address the human component in all this is doomed to failure. I wish there was an easy solution, but I don't believe there is....There's a lot going on here and there is no quick fix.

How am I to know if I'm buying a "normal" sporting rifle or a "people-slaughtering device?" I've owend at least 10 semiautomatic rifles since the mid-1970s. None of mine have slaughtered any people.

I will make it easier for you - consider all semi-automatic guns to be people slaughtering devices. After all they were designed to slaughter as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Their classification does not change depending on whether you use them for the purpose for which they were invented.

Hunting deer, bear, moose or any other game with weapons like this with 30, 60 or 100+ round clips, or drums and exploding bullets is illegal as it should be. Even shotguns used for hunting birds have to be plugged in order to be used as “sporting guns”. Let’s face it, the ass holes in Buffalo, Uvalde and Highland Park bought these weapons set up that way and ammunition expressly for the purpose of killing as many people as possible in a short time. Those who insist on having these kinds of weapons are suspect of being a little touched in the head and studies have shown that most of them have tiny dicks and tiny brains.

That a given rifle CAN FIRE rapidly doesn’t mean that it must. If you pull the trigger once, you get one shot, and as the top post indicates such hunting rifles have existed since 1907.
Most jurisdictions also do t allow hunting with 30+ round magazines, a typical limit being fu e rounds, and five-round magazines are readily available for AR15s.
And huntung doesn’t matter - the 2nd Amendment is utterly silent on the right to hunt. It protects the right to keep and bear arms. To date, the courts have said this right is to keep and bear them for “traditionally lawful purposes” — which include participating in target sports that involve the use of 30+ round magazines.
