ROUND EYES

The last thing I remember
was her eyes
Brown, blue, green
I'm not sure now
It doesn't matter

Prettiest eyes I'd ever seen
As they looked into mine
and held me captive
they masked the horror
and the truth.

As she bound my wounds
and eased my pain
She shed tears for me, gentle tears
like breaths that cease
then come again

Love's labor, quickly, calmly 'tho
attending to the task
Undaunted by the cries and screams
and the blood and sweat and gore
And eyes that stare, afraid to ask
And the misery that is war

The last thing I remember
was her face
The loveliest face I'd ever known
Mother, sister, lover, friend
All these things she was to me
as she stopped my fear
and set me free

The last thing I remember
as I looked into her eyes
Round eyes
My vision moved from her eyes
into God's

(For all the Armed Forces Nurses in Viet Nam)

Jack, it's hard to imagine a jerk like you writing such beautiful poetry. I saw many a female nurse in 'Nam and fell for more than one of them, the poem is a very touching tribute to ladies that suffered almost as much as those of us in the field.
Sincerely, I thank you for such a nice sentiment.

Well, thank you; I mean it. I don't mix politics with my writing. My writing transends that, or at least that is what I strive for.
I came across the picture of the woman, at the top of my Blog post of the poem, on a website, on which I was posting some things, and I fell for her. I wrote the poem and then e-mailed the site for permission to use the picture. They said okay. I don't know who she is or was but I bet she made life easier for a lot of our guys in that war. God bless her.
