So you would have invaded Japan and sacrificed the lives of hundreds of thousands of US troops instead of using the atomic bombs?

Do you actually think that if the Japanese had nuclear weapons they would have hesitated? They slaughtered people in the Philippines and the Nanking massacre is not debatable as an atrocity. The Japanese lost more lives in the non-nuclear air strikes.

It was working people who paid the big price … not the Japanese government responsible for those earlier atrocities (which came with their own propagandistic justifications). What would have been wrong with ending the war through negotiation?
