Biden just had a speech about it.
He plans to hurt their economy and likely to support resistance to Russia in Ukraine and elsewhere.
The Orthodox Epiphany is today. Russians everywhere went out in sub zero temps and threw themselves in rivers and streams...

What hurt will come to a people who eat root vegetables and grain..... They'll shrug at sanctions

The fact that 45% of their economy depends on the very people they are going up against.

Let's see how long they want to eat roots and bathe in icy rivers.

They we can see how much they really like it when that all the economy can produce because Putin decided that NATO should disband and retreat.

Are you kidding? Putin has demanded absolutely unacceptable changes to NATO and US defense policies. He is trying to tell his population that the west is a threat.

I believe that he is bluffing. His economy is not able to support a war. His military is in a state of disrepair....Would he chance a popular revolt against his rule?
He can demand such changes until the cows come home. He’s not going to get them. He may be bluffing - we don’t know. He’s got a shitstorm on his hands if he invades.

To be effective sanctions have to hit Putin and the oligarchs in the wallet. That takes concerted efforts from the western world and big business.

Why do you think Britain and France would have gone to war?

Remember that in 1933 the Japanese had defied the world and invaded China...the world did nothing. Mussolini went to war in Africa against Ethiopia...the world did nothing.

Haven't we learned?
Over colonies and more generally the inevitable rivalry of imperialist powers. Same reason Britain sank the French Mediterranean fleet.

Putin’s regime is already tottering hence his need to throw his weight around to compensate for his tremendous unpopularity. Inability to pay soldiers and key workers will inevitably spell collapse.

exactly why standing up to him now is in order even his people yearn for ties to the west...

Well, the U.S. is offering the stiffest resistance it has ever offered his regime. I do not support sanctions or belligerent troop movements but I am glad to see military aid to Ukraine being stepped up so dramatically.
