It pisses me off when what could be a bipartisan reform effort is turned into a piece of cheap partisan theatrics. If we, the people, think $1.4 billion is too much (and it sure seems to be, to me) then change the figure, going forward. Set it at, say $500 million, indexed to inflation, starting in 2015 (to allow for any long-term plans already made) and be done with it. But don't use it as a petty opportunity to jab at a particular politician, especially when all indications are he's been an improvement on that front.
It is a lot of money, but the figure includes items folks don't know are part of the expenses. It also places blame on Obama for items he has no control over. Camp David costs 8 million a year...and that is budgeted on the POTUS expense sheet. Doesn't matter if he ever goes there or not. Yes, additional costs incur when it it used, but W used it frequently. There was zero outrage from the right.

I remember Carter trying to conserve during previous energy crises...and he was attacked for behavior unfitting the most powerful man in the world. A sweater? Carrying one's own luggage? These actions were labeled as beneath the office.

We love to jab our politicians, for any and every reason.

Obama Returns to Hawaii at an Added Cost of Over $3 Million
http://www.whitehousedossier.com/2013/01/02/obama-returns-hawaii-added-cost-3-million/

Air Force One is known to cost about $180,000 an hour to fly. Based on an estimated 18 hours roundtrip flying time for the jet between Washington and Honolulu, the travel cost alone of Obama’s decision to return to Hawaii amounts to around $3.24 million. And that doesn’t include the price tag for the massive security operation required to move the president or the cost of the cargo plane that follows Air Force One around.

A $7,000,000.00+ vacation on our dime.
One of the perks of the job Lesli, or should we say one of the requirements of the job to have to take these people with them.
What do you think he should do, lay off all the SS and fly standby?
We know GWB did that didn't he?

You guys should pass a law restricting any POTUS from leaving the DC metro area without a hall pass from Drudge.
No, the hall pass should be required simply to leave the WH grounds. Those bulletproof SUVs suck a lot of taxpayer gas! ;-)

Such bvllshit. Your link doesn't work, and I was looking for who said it cost $180,000 an hour to fly Air Force One. That is absolute bullshit. Over a million dollars to fly to Hawaii????? Maybe if you calculate how many coach seats you can put on a 747, then multiply it by full price of a commercial flight from DC to Hawaii, then you can come up with some unreasonable number. That is typical of the way Republicans propagandize to their stupid minions.

I'm thinking using Southwest would be fiscally prudent for the president and his entourage. Free peanuts and Rapid Reward points as a bonus. Bags fly free too!

He eclipsed FDR's vacation time for three terms.

The more germane point is what was happening in the country while he was on vacation. We had just suffered the most devastating attack since Pearl Harbor, had two wars going on, one in the wrong country, and were nose diving into a recession while doubling the debt.

He was clearing brush because it made him feel better about himself to do something he understood.

She yanked the number out of her butt, or someone on Breitbart did it for her. CNN reported last night that it was around a million round trip, but that includes a ton more than fuel. It's security, maintenance, crew.. everything, and the damn thing costs about half that when it's doing nothing but sitting.

You must admit it was thoughtless of him to have been born and raised in Hawaii.

Yeah, why couldn't that lazy black Kenyan feller have bought a ranch in Crawdad and spent 6 months out of the year there?

'Sides (as JackD points out) ... Bush was WORKIN' clearin' brush and stuff ... not just "sittin' around". :D

Factcheck.org has the full scoop and where that figure came from. It was posted in a blog.

They don't need fact-checkers 2wit. They'd rather operate on hunches and assumptions. More here, it's pricey but it goes with the territory. Funny, i remember LoC posters bitching about the ridiculous quantity of Bushie vacay time, but NEVER the cost of AF1. Remember Pickles and the Twins went on several Africa and Euro jaunts which they TOTALLY forgot about. ;-)

Boehner and House Repubs shoulda took Plan A when it was offered. They caused Pres. Obama to have to fly back to DC. You guys need some new outrage material. That well turned out to be a dry hole.

Oh where was the outrage...where oh where...

...To put Obama's use of Air Force One into context, we also asked for travel data for his predecessor, President George W. Bush. Bush took 89 missions and 259 sorties in 2002, his second year as president, according to the airlift group. And in his first two years, Bush took 148 missions with 416 sorties, compared with 126 missions with 324 sorties for Obama over two years...

Yep, my recollection is that plan A was a slightly better deal for Pugs. Ah well, we'll just throw the cost of the extra AF1 R/T trip onto the 19 billion their last debt ceiling hostage-take cost.

Do not forget,Obama flew over New York and New Jersey too,to see the devastation! He didn't? Oh,that is right. Wrong hurricane and President!

Chris Christie admires the heck out of Obama. No Brownie there.
